Water-based wood stains color the wood while keeping the wood grain visible. Wood stains only add color to the wood, as they are made on a water basis (therefore they wash off upon contact with water) and do not provide any protection. The wood is first stained with the stain, and when satisfied with the shade, it can be protected with oils or waxes or a water-based coating.
