Flaxseed oil is obtained from flax seeds (Linum usitatissimum):
- by cold pressing,
- by hot pressing
- by extraction
European flax seeds contain up to 30% oil, while East Indian seeds can contain up to 40%. The most important component of flaxseed oil is linolenic acid, which causes the oil to dry in combination with oxygen from the air (oxidative-drying oil). Since flaxseed oil dries relatively slowly (depending on composition and external conditions 5-12 days), drying agents - driers are added. Thus, drier flaxseed oil is referred to as flax firn or flaxseed oil with driers. These are cobalt and zirconium salts.
Flax firn usually dries in 24 hours.
Firn (flaxseed oil with driers) is more resistant to moisture than raw flaxseed oil.
